Formula E GEN4 car unleashed

A New Benchmark for Speed, Sustainability and Innovation in Motorsport

The all-new GEN4 race car marks a reinvention of motorsport and the next chapter of electric racing. Capable of high speeds, the fastest Formula E car in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship’s history has been engineered for today's pioneers and tomorrow's next-generation talent, setting a new global standard for innovation, speed, and sustainability.

New Look of Speed

The GEN4 Formula E car is a radical reimagining of electric racing, featuring an even more aggressive 5,540mm x 1,800mm footprint designed to harness a massive 600kW (815bhp) output. This futuristic chassis introduces two aerodynamic packages that switch between high-downforce qualifying and low-drag race modes to exceed 200 mph, and permanent All-Wheel Drive for unprecedented traction.

Capable of reaching speeds in excess of 335kph, 0-100kph in approximately 1.8 seconds, and 0-200kph in just 4.4 seconds - 1.5 seconds faster than its predecessor -  GEN4 will deliver 50% more power in race mode than the current GEN3 Evo race car. The GEN4 car will be an average of 10 seconds faster per lap than the GEN3 car in qualifying mode. In ATTACK MODE, GEN4 produces up to 600kW of power, a 71% increase in base output over GEN3 Evo, delivering performance that pushes the limits of electric racing. GEN4 is the only single-seater race car with permanent all-wheel drive.

With racing starting from the 2026/27 Season later this year, GEN4 promises to deliver the fastest-ever lap time seen by a Formula E car - at least five seconds per lap faster on street circuits - compared to the most recent generation, the GEN3 Evo.

David Coulthard experiences GEN4 in Monaco

Following an exclusive Monaco test drive, motorsport legend and two-time Monaco Grand Prix winner, David Coulthard, declared that the all-new Formula E GEN4 racing car will completely redefine high-performance electric motorsport. With the groundbreaking GEN4 unleashed to deliver a mind-blowing 0-100 km/h in just 1.8 seconds and top speeds exceeding 205 mph, Coulthard praised its unprecedented all-wheel-drive acceleration, comparing entering the legendary Monaco tunnel as a "hyperdrive" experience ahead of its official 2026/27 season debut.

Formula 1 Paddock Inspects New GEN4 Car

The incredible performance of the all-new Formula E GEN4 car sparked massive intrigue across the Formula 1 paddock during the Monaco E-Prix weekend. With the revolutionary GEN4 unleashed to deliver permanent all-wheel drive and a blistering 1.8-second 0-100 km/h sprint, F1 stars like reigning champion and McLaren driver Lando Norris, Oliver Bearman from Haas, and Audi teammates Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoletto swarmed trackside for an up-close look, with Norris even expressing a keen desire to test-drive the high-performance electric machine himself.

Formula E GEN4 car power

Most Powerful Formula E Car Ever

The GEN4 delivers a staggering 600kW (815bhp) of peak power—a 71% increase over the previous generation. Fueled by a new 55kWh battery, the car features a dual-motor system capable of 700kW regenerative braking, recovering nearly 50% of the energy used during a race. With efficiency exceeding 97%, the GEN4 is the ultimate masterclass in high-output energy management.

Formula E GEN4 all-wheel drive

Active All-Wheel Drive, All the time

The GEN4 introduces permanent active All-Wheel Drive, delivering a record-shattering 1.8-second 0-60 mph launch. By utilising dual motors for constant four-wheel traction, the system ensures the car’s full 600kW (815bhp) output is converted into relentless acceleration and superior cornering agility.

To handle this massive power, a new dual-tire strategy features wider dimensions—295mm front and 330mm rear. Teams can now switch between specialised high-performance dry or "Monsoon" wet compounds, both engineered from sustainable materials to support the car’s 100% recyclability goal without sacrificing grip.

Formula E GEN4 sustainability

Sustainability at the heart of the GEN4

The GEN4 sets a new global benchmark as the world’s most sustainable race car, engineered with a "circular" philosophy where every component is designed for a second life. The chassis is 100% recyclable or reusable, featuring bodywork constructed from at least 20% recycled carbon fibre and bio-based composites. By combining ethical sourcing with a powertrain that recovers nearly 50% of its energy through 700kW regeneration, the GEN4 proves that elite, high-performance motorsport can be entirely zero-waste.

The all-new GEN4 era officially begins with the start of Season 13. This next-generation car represents the biggest technical leap in the Championship's history, featuring a complete overhaul of the powertrain, battery technology, and aerodynamics.

The GEN4 car is a massive step up in performance, delivering 450kW of power in standard race mode. However, when ATTACK MODE or Qualifying power is engaged, the car reaches a staggering 600kW (approximately 815bhp). This is a 71% increase in peak power compared to the previous GEN3 Evo generation.

Yes. Unlike the GEN3 Evo, which utilised only its front motor for traction during race starts and in ATTACK MODE, the GEN4 is the first Formula E car and single-seater racer with permanent active All-Wheel Drive. This allows for unparalleled grip and torque vectoring through every corner, significantly improving lap times on circuits.

The GEN4 car is capable of reaching 0-60 mph in just 1.8 seconds. This record-breaking pace is driven by a massive jump to 600kW (815bhp) of peak power and the introduction of permanent All-Wheel Drive (AWD). Unlike previous generations that used front-motor power only in specific "boost" modes, the GEN4 utilises active torque distribution across all four wheels at all times. This eliminates wheel spin and provides a 30% faster launch than a current Formula 1 car, allowing the GEN4 to maintain maximum traction even when accelerating out of the tightest street-circuit hairpins.

The GEN4 car is expected to comfortably exceed 200 mph (322 km/h). While Formula 1 cars still maintain a higher top speed on long straights (approx. 220-230 mph), the GEN4’s performance gap is shrinking. With 600kW of electric power and permanent AWD, the GEN4 is expected to be much quicker per lap than current cars, making it competitive with Formula 2 and IndyCar performance levels.

For the first time, the series will move away from a single "all-weather" tyre. There will be two distinct specifications: a primary high-performance tyre for standard conditions and a dedicated extreme wet weather tyre to ensure high-speed racing continues even in heavy rain

Efficiency remains the core of Formula E. The GEN4 car features enhanced regenerative braking that recovers up to 700kW of energy—more than its own peak driving power. This allows the car to complete full race distances despite its massive power increase, with nearly 50% of the energy used during a race coming directly from regeneration.

The GEN4 era (2026–2030) has attracted a premier lineup of global automotive giants and iconic racing names. The confirmed manufacturers for Season 13 include:

  • Jaguar

  • Porsche

  • Nissan

  • Stellantis: Fielding two brands— Citroën and the newly joined Opel GSE Formula E Team.

  • Mahindra Racing

  • Lola Yamaha
