Early Career
Born in Oberstdorf in 1997, Günther began his racing career in karts at the age of 10. After three years, the German driver progressed to the world of open-wheel racing in 2011 in the Formula BMW Talent Cup. In 2013, Günther competed in ADAC Formel Masters from ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg e.V., ending the season second.
Günther made his debut in the 2015 European Formula 3 campaign with Mucke Motorsport before joining Prema Powerteam in 2016. The following year, he finished a respectable fifth at the legendary Macau Grand Prix before moving up to Formula 2 in 2018, joining BWT Arden.
Formula E | 2018-21
Fresh from a season in Formula 2 with BWT Arden, Günther debuted in Formula E with Dragon after serving as the team's reserve driver in the 2017/18 season. Prior to joining the championship full-time a year later with BMW i Andretti Motorsport, the German took part in the Formula E Rookie Test in Marrakesh, 2018.
Günther competed in 10 races with the Dragon squad during his maiden campaign in 2018/19, finishing 17th in the Drivers' standings, but impressing the paddock with his two Super Pole appearances.
BMW i Andretti Motorsport signed the young Bavarian full-time in 2019. He finished ninth in the Drivers' Championship - just ahead of teammate Alexander Sims - proving his talent with breakthrough wins in Santiago (where he became Formula E’s youngest-ever race winner) and Tempelhof.
His impressive performances yielded a second season with the BMW manufacturer squad in 2020 - Formula E's first as an FIA World Championship.
Formula E | 2021-24
For the 2021/22 season, the young German headed to Nissan e.dams alongside veteran Sebastien Buemi, but both drivers struggled to challenge the frontrunners; Günther's best finish was an eighth in London.
Günther’s skills were picked up by Maserati MSG Racing for the following season. In what was a middle-of-the-road debut for the Maserati, Günther led the charge, picking up multiple podiums and a win in the process, taking him to seventh in the standings.
The 2023/24 campaign saw Maserati and Günther continue their partnership, with the German-born racer partnering rookie Jehan Daruvala. Günther continued his consistent run of form, scoring points in the opening six rounds of the season, which included a win in Tokyo followed by third in Misano.
Formula E | 2024-26
2024/25 and the GEN3 Era beckoned, and with that, Günther moved to DS PENSKE, continuing his winning ways after changing to (the now iconic) black and gold.
He immortalised himself in Formula E history by taking the first-ever victory in a PIT BOOST race, another victory of his that came on the very last lap. Günther then led a DS PENSKE 1-2 in Shanghai, with former team Jean-Eric Vergne joining him on the podium.
Günther remained with DS PENSKE for the following season, the final year of GEN3, which proved to be a challenging one, only resulting in top-10 finishes at six races and a total tally of 23 championship points.
For the 2026/27 season, the first of the all-new GEN4 era, Gunther joins Paysafe Envision Racing, partnering newcomer Zak O’Sullivan.
