Early Career
Starting his career in karting at the age of seven, Rowland spent nearly a decade racing in various series around the United Kingdom before progressing to Formula Renault, taking a place on the grid of the 2010 Formula Renault UK Winter Series with CRS Racing.
Moving to Formula Renault 3.5 in 2013, Rowland finished his campaign in fourth with seven podium finishes, before taking the championship title in 2015 with Fortec Motorsports. That same year, he made his debut in Formula E with Mahindra Racing, filling in for driver Nick Heidfield in the Punta del Este E-Prix where he finished 13th.
Formula 1
After making his debut in GP2 in Silverstone the same year, Rowland competed in the series for two seasons, finishing third overall in 2017. The Sheffield-born driver then progressed to become the Renault F1 team development driver, as he also took up the role of Junior Driver at Williams Martini Racing in 2018.
Formula E | 2017-2021
Joining Formula E full-time after one outing for Mahindra in the 2015/16 season, Rowland then secured a full-time seat in the 2017/18 season, partnering Sebastien Buemi for the Japanese team’s debut campaign. He made an impressive start to Formula E, finishing inside the top-10 in the Drivers’ Championship, which saw him achieve the Rookie of the Year award with three pole positions and two podiums.
In his second season with Nissan e.Dams, Rowland put in a consistent run of point-scoring finishes across 2019/20 that culminated in a debut victory at the penultimate round of the season in the final Berlin double-header.
The 2020/21 season was a slow burn, with bad luck curtailing the front-running pace - certainly for the Brit. Rowland rounded off with another podium at Tempelhof, adding to silverware in Puebla.
Formula E | 2021-23
Rowland moved to pastures new for the 2021/22 season to complete another all-British driver line-up alongside Alexander Sims at Indian outfit Mahindra Racing.
The 34-year-old stuck with Mahindra for 2022/23 and struggled to remain competitive throughout the season. It proved to be a disappointing season for him as he finished towards the bottom of the Drivers’ Championship, and ended up parting ways with the team midway through the campaign.
Formula E | 2023-26
However, Rowland’s break from Formula E was short-lived, as he was back on the 2023/24 grid with Nissan.
The shift to the Japanese manufacturer paid dividends for the Brit, with a four-podium run that ended with a trip to the top step in Misano. He very nearly made it a clean sweep but was halted in the closing stages when he ran out of usable energy. This podium performance put Rowland right into championship contention, as he added to this with a set of third places in the Berlin double-header. However, his hopes of a first title were dashed after he missed races in Portland due to illness.
Despite not having the best start to the following season after a technical hiccup, he romped to the top step with a thrilling series of podium finishes. Taking his first title success in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in 2025, taking three podiums and an incredible four wins in the highly competitive series.
As reigning champion, Rowland became one of the championships’ most consistent drivers, with six podiums and a victory, which kept him in the title fight until the last rounds of the season. The final race of the GEN3 era proved difficult for Rowland, as he ran outside of the points for the majority of the round, before working his way up to ninth and ending the season on 137 points.
Rowland continues with the Nissan Formula E Team for the 2026/27 season - the first of the GEN4 era.
